Wheeler Endowment for Young Organists Recital by Deniz Uz
Sunday, March 27th at 3:00pm
Each Spring, St. Peter's invites a gifted young musician to perform in concert as part of its "Wheeler Endowment for Young Organists" series. This year, we are proud to present Yale's Deniz Uz in recital on Sunday, March 27 at 3 p.m. Mr. Uz, who studies with Thomas Murray, will play works by Dupré, Bach, Franck and Reubke.
The concert is made possible each year by a donation from Mary Gwen Wheeler in honor of her parents, Pat and George, longtime members of St. Peter's (they now reside in Kentucky). The Wheeler bequest is a permanent endowment, established in the hope that St. Peter's - in view of its proximity to New York, and because its organ is a rather famous one, and the church architecturally interesting, and the local audience supportive - could assist talented young men and women by giving them an opportunity to establish concert careers.
NPR's "Pipedreams" counts St. Peter's 4 manual, 63 rank E.M. Skinner Organ among "the world's finest pipe organs." The organ was installed in 1930 and has remained virtually as it was left by the builders, earning an Historic Organ Citation from the Organ Historical Society. The console was restored in 1981 without any modernization or addition and the rest of the organ restored in 1991.
Mr. Uz is a freshman at Yale College. In the spring of 2010 he graduated from Interlochen Arts Academy, where his organ teacher was Thomas Bara. Tickets: $15 suggested donation for adults; $10 suggested donation for students.
